Winchelsea Primary School

How We Teach

Instructional Model

Winchelsea Primary School implements an effective teaching learning program, based around the principles of explicit instruction.  The lessons follow a regular, common pattern.  Teachers will explicitly show, through worked examples, what is expected of the students.  The diagram below outlines the parts of a lesson at our school.

OPPORTUNITIES TO RESPOND

As teachers introduce the content and provide examples of how to use new skills, students are required to actively participate in the learning.  Opportunities to respond are embedded throughout the learning day to ensure that students are learning.

MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT

In line with the evidence base, Winchelsea Primary School implements a three-tiered approach to support students who require a little extra in their learning.  The document below indicates how that is implemented at our school.

Text Spine Overview

The text spine provides all community members with a snapshot of the texts that will be read across seven years of schooling at Winchelsea Primary School. These texts aren’t the only text that will be read – there will definitely be others that are shared throughout the classroom learning program. These texts form our guaranteed reading spine. The texts have been carefully selected to provide a broad reading curriculum across the years of learning.
